Cape Whisky Club: The Macallan Editions
A few weeks ago we tasted The Macallan’s core range. In truth, that tasting served not only as an enjoyable whisky evening, but also a delay tactic…
You see, when our friend and fellow whisky groupie Thami Banda got word that we’d be hitting up The Macallan Edition No. 2, 3 and 4 in an epic blind tasting, he immediately got in contact to make us an offer we couldn’t refuse: wait 3 weeks, and he’d provide us with the brand-spanking new Edition No. 5 to add to the mix!
Once again, this felt like a no brainer 🙂 As such, we got together this last Friday and cracked open one of the first bottles of Edition No. 5 in the country, alongside its 3 older brothers:
The Macallan Edition No.2 (48.2%) – In collaboration with El Celler de Can Roca in Spain. The Edition No.2 uses no fewer than 7 cask types from 4 different sherry bodegas, and along with expert blending has made a wonderfully potent, spicy and zesty dram – my personal favourite!
The Macallan Edition No.3 (48.3%) – In collaboration with Master Perfumer Roja Dove. Comprising both first and second fill European and American oak, this expression is lighter and crisper, softer on the palate, floral and fresh.
The Macallan Edition No.4 (48.4%) – The Macallan’s tribute to their high-tech, world class home in Speyside, the 4th Edition goes back to their renowned sherry cask roots for a rich, sweet experience.
The Macallan Edition No.5 (48.5%) – in partnership with Pantone (seriously!). For the designers out there, Pantone was enlisted to develop the striking shade of purple on this year’s label as an ode to the use of natural colour. The whisky is comprised of bourbon casks and Spanish oak, each lending flavour and colour characteristics to the final malt.
Once again a massive thank you to the absolutely legendary Thami Banda, a truly exceptional South African and brilliant brand ambassador!
