Cape Whisky Club: The Macallan Core Range

It was at a Highland Park tasting a few years ago that I discovered The Macallan Edition No. 2, snuck into the country prematurely by an enterprising and generous whisky nerd. One sip and I knew we were on to a winner – shockingly good stuff.

Since then, I’ve made a point of snapping up each new bottle in the annual release, until enough of them were gathered together to make a single, exceptional tasting session. Having secured Editions No. 2, 3 and 4, I recently announced that the time had come for the Cape Whisky Club to dive head first into the Editions.

Enter Thami Banda – beloved whisky aficionado and shiny new brand ambassador for The Macallan here in South Africa – who got wind of the our little collection and suggested we do The Macallan’s core range as a warmup to the big event. We couldn’t have been happier to agree!

Without delay Thami whisked himself down to Cape Town, where he wowed us with his knowledge, wit and humble style – not to mention his whisky!

The lineup

The Macallan 12The Macallan 12 Triple Cask (43%) – the baby of the core range but nevertheless steeped in sherry oak, with a dash of ex-bourbon cask for good measure.

The Macallan 15The Macallan 15 Triple Cask (43%) – my personal favourite of the range. The 15 dials up the sherry without sacrificing sheer drinkability, one of those bottles to crack open for a special occasion and ensure is finished before the evening is out!

The Macallan 18The Macallan 18 Triple Cask (43%) – another step towards European oak puts this firmly in the “dessert whisky” camp, rich and decadent.

The Macallan Rare Cask The Macallan Rare Cask (43%) – the second batch of the exceptional sherry monster and overall star of the show. A real treat to try alongside its triple-cask brethren, showing off the cask management muscle The Macallan is known for. Delicious!

Huge thanks to Thami Banda for spoiling us rotten – here’s to the Editions tasting on the 15th of November!
