Ardbeg Day – or Whisky Christmas, as we call it – was once again upon us, this time deep in the heart of worldwide lockdown and self isolation. As such, we had to get a little creative to make the magic happen this year! Fortunately it was freezing in the Cape, which meant nobody was complaining about having to stay indoors for a virtual Ardbeg drinkathon.
The star of the show was of course Ardbeg Blaaack (46%), a bottle marking the 20th anniversary of the Ardbeg Committee – the official distillery fanclub – and another one of Ardbeg’s (now regular) annual cask experiments. This time around, we have New Zealand Pinot Noir casks in the mix, a first for the distillery and for many a whisky clubber. And served up in some wonderful packaging to boot!
Together with its high strength cousins Corryvreckan and Uigeadail (club favourite and sherry heavy hitter) samples were sent out to Cape Town’s most prominent peat-heads in time for a shared virtual round of sniffing, sipping and speculating.
We were thrilled to be joined by Robert Gray from RGBC to walk us through thought process behind Blaaack and give us a little inside info – in particular, a little more about the composition of the bottle and the design choices made this year. Cracking stuff all around, and a truly wonderful way to spend an icy winter’s evening at the tip of Africa.
If you’re lucky enough to find a bottle of Ardbeg Blaaack floating around, snap this one up – for many of us, it marked the best annual release in memory, and a truly remarkable concoction of blending and cask handling. Brilliant!
See you next year!
