Our very first blind-tasting! Given the roaring success of our Johnnie Walker head-to-head comparison, we decided to replicate the experiment with Chivas Regal, but this time… going in completely blind.
All three whiskies were decanted into unmarked bottles, and tasted in a random order. At the end of the evening, everyone voted for their favourite of the three, and the whiskies were revealed. Here were the results:
8 Votes – Chivas Regal Extra
The surprise hit of the evening was the middle-of-the-range Chivas Regal Extra, which everyone enjoyed and most people thought to be the most expensive and desirable of the bunch. The Chivas Extra is in fact an extremely well priced, exceptionally well balanced NAS blend featuring a higher proportion of top quality sherry casks. Great stuff.
3 Votes – Chivas Regal 18 YO
Only three of us voted for the top-shelf Chivas Regal 18 YO, a blend whose higher price is matched by an impressive, complex creaminess – a masterful piece of blending. One to be savoured over the course of an evening!
1 Vote – Chivas Regal 12 YO
Exactly one member voted for the classic Chivas Regal 12 YO as his favourite, which suited him just fine – given the blind tasting, he can now rest assured that his money is well saved over the higher-tiered Chivas blends! The Chivas 12 is a real cracker of a blend, deservedly competing with the mighty Johnnie Walker Black Label, and an absolute must-try.
