#LaddieSA Twitter Tasting

To celebrate the launch of the newest edition of the mighty and much revered (feared?) Octomore in South Africa, Bruichladdich was kind enough to send over some samples for a live local Twitter tasting – #LaddieSA.

Lead personally by the outrageously cool Adam Hannett (Head Distiller of Bruichladdich) all the way from Islay, we worked our way up a couple of classic drams and ended with the star of the show. And all the while Adam was on hand to give us a peek into the inner-workings of the distillery and answer (in transparent Bruichladdich style) any questions we had. In short, a whisky geek’s dream!

The Lineup

No Bruichladdich tasting can start without dipping your toes into the Classic Laddie (50%), a dependable, complex, versatile dram and the absolute benchmark of bourbon-matured whiskies. Fantastic stuff.

However, before hopping onto the one-way peat train that is the Octomore, one more warm-up round: the venerable Port Charlotte (50%), my personal favourite of the Laddie range. I could drink this stuff all day. With a little of that Talisker-style salt, plenty of fruit and a powerful alcohol punch, it’s a must try for peat lovers and whisky dabblers alike.

Finally, the headline act… Octomore 07.4, at a sledgehammer strength of 61.2%! Good grief. Without a doubt, the most vibrant and manly edition of the Octomore so far. But as always, not for the faint of heart, or the novice – some experienced water-control-skills are required here to get it to the “perfect” level of heat and flavour. However, it’s well worth the effort. 7 years in virgin oak (a first for Octomore) have imparted some incredibly rich caramel, bourbon-style flavours, perfectly integrating with those classic floral and barbeque notes… and of course, great stinking piles of peat! Delicious.
