Hosted Tasting: Chivas Regal

What’s this? Why it’s Peter Metheven, salty old codger and whisky aficionado, who once again joined us to deliver one of his world-renowned whisky presentations and wow us with the latest bottles forged in the fires of Pernod Ricard.

Where Peter had previously bestowed upon us his passion for all things The Glenlivet, this time we were treated to the entire vertical Chivas Regal range, tackling each bottle one at a time and seeing what makes them tick. All aboard!

The Lineup

Of course, first up was the bitter rival to Black Label – Chivas Regal 12 (43%), a fruity, warming intro into the Chivas style and beautifully showing off their liberal use of quality casks right from the first bottle.

On to the sherry monster of the range in the form of Chivas Regal Extra (43%). A NAS blend featuring more drippy sherry casks than the original 12, and once again… the hit of the evening.

Next up, my personal favourite of the range – Chivas Regal 18 (43%). This stuff is like drinking Christmas is a bottle – mince pies, raisins, chocolate, icing and even something a little meaty lurking in the background. A fantastic value 18-year-old expression, well worth cracking open for a special occaision.

Lastly, the cheeky new blended malt on the market, a little bottle called Chivas Regal Ultis (43%). Consisting of precisely five single malts forming the core of the Chivas recipe – namely Allt-á-Bhainne, Braeval, Longmorn, Strathisla and Tormore – this is a real treat for any whisky lover, and a rare opportunity to get one step closer to appreciating malts from less accessible distilleries. Great stuff!
